10 Horror Movie Characters Who Did Everything Right And Still Failed

8. Tommy Tilden - The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978 Ending
IFC Midnight

The Autopsy of Jane Doe is one of those ultra-satisfying horror films where the overwhelming majority of the movie's characters actually act rationally and respond to their terrifying circumstances in a believable way.

And that's no truer here than of coroner Tommy Tilden (Brian Cox), who while performing the titular autopsy, finds himself beset by an increasing mountain of unexplainable and eventually supernatural phenomena.

It's not long before Tommy appreciates the full gravity of the situation and attempts to flee the morgue with his son Austin (Emile Hirsch), but alas, a broken elevator and front door blocked by a tree prevent their exit.

At every possible opportunity, Tommy and Austin make a reasonable effort to escape, and when things get especially dire in the climax, Tommy even attempts to offer himself up to Jane Doe as a sacrifice to save his son.

But alas, despite Tommy's commendable efforts, both father and son are dead by film's end.
