10 Horror Movie Characters Who Died Breaking Their Own Rules

1. Lee Abbot - A Quiet Place

Lee Abbot's demise in A Quiet Place bears uncannily tragic parallels to Tom's Bird Box death, as both men sacrifice their lives in the interest of protecting their families. John Krasinski's character breaks the golden rule of his cinematic universe in order to save his children from the nightmarish antagonists that populate 2018's genre-redefining horror.

The entities that terrorize our protagonists in A Quiet Place are terrifyingly formidable aliens. Seemingly impervious to any manner of human-inflicted damage, the creatures possess super hearing, allowing them to track any surviving human unfortunate enough to step on a twig or knock over a piece of debris several blocks away. As the film's ominous tagline succinctly puts it, if they hear you, they hunt you.

The penultimate sequence of the film sees Abbot's children trapped in the family truck by one of the antagonists as they attempt to make their escape; Lee is seriously wounded during the ambush. Realizing that he has but one option remaining to save his children, Krasinski has audiences reaching for the tissues in short order. He signs to his deaf daughter that he has always loved her, before letting out a wordless, impassioned roar of guttural emotion to distract the creature.

The heroic Lee draws the monstrous being away at the cost of his own life and breaking the film's unbreakable rule in the process; never make a sound.
