10 Horror Movie Characters Who Died Breaking Their Own Rules

2. Tom - Bird Box

A Quiet Place Lee
Netflix

It seems almost unfair to include Bird Box's Tom on this list. Malorie's love interest meets his heartbreaking end breaking the inherent rule of the film's chilling universe, but he only does so in order to protect the lives of his loved ones.

For those unfamiliar with the plot line of Netflix's smash hit, Bird Box features insidious entities that compel a person to kill themselves upon witnessing them. However, this ghoulish status quo has an exception; some survivors are driven mad to the point where they force unaffected people to view the deathly specters. This harrowing premise claims the lives of all Bird Box's initial survivors, bar Malorie, Tom and the two children born over the course of the film.

Eking out an existence five years after the initial set of traumatic events, the family hear of a community safe from the entities and make plans to set off, using blindfolds for protection against the unseen antagonists. However, things take a tragic turn when a posse of the aforementioned insane survivors attack. Tom distracts and subsequently kills all of the attackers, but only after breaking the film's integral rule; removing his blindfold and thus exposing himself to the deadly creatures.

Cue the waterworks as Tom succumbs to the insidious entities and blows his own head off. A tragic fate for our supporting protagonist, but one entirely appropriate for a film as dark as Satan's armpit.
