10 Horror Movie Characters Who Died Breaking Their Own Rules

3. Rory Adams - Life

A Quiet Place Lee
Columbia Pictures

While this writer is unfamiliar with the intricacies surrounding the exact specifications required in order to be an astronaut, one would assume that a pretty basic unspoken rule of space travel is to think and act rationally.

Space is a truly hostile environment; a dark silent, vacuum stretching on endlessly in every direction and capable of turning a person inside out in seconds. Astronauts find themselves separated from these terrifying surroundings by nothing more than a few layers of high tech metal. Any rash, spur-of-the-moment decision, no matter how innocuous, could result in the deaths of the entire crew.

As such, the conduct of Ryan Reynolds' Rory Adams in 2017's Life likely does not feature in NASA's how-to manual. Adams' actions are plenty heroic; the engineer puts himself in alien visitor Calvin's path by rescuing biologist Hugh and subsequently being contained in the lab with the murderous extraterrestrial. However, by even attempting the rescue, Adams flouted an integral rule of space travel, breaking Calvin's quarantine and jeopardizing the rest of the crew.

Even more lamentably, as an engineer, Adams probably should have been aware of the potential pitfalls of using a flamethrower on a space station, even when faced with such a terrifying situation. While he somehow manages to avoid chargrilling himself, the flamethrower eventually falls from his dead hands, triggering the sprinklers and allowing Calvin's escape through a duct.
