Barbarian director Zach Cregger said in interviews that his mysterious horror film was entirely concerned with the notion of listening to your gut, and what can happen when you don't.

Case in point, protagonist Tess (Georgina Campbell) ignores numerous obvious red flags throughout the movie, enough that she very nearly loses her life.

First and foremost, Tess agrees to stay at the double-booked AirBNB with a man, Keith (Bill Skarsgård), she's never met before. While in fairness Keith does end up being a regular guy, Tess' has several more infuriating acts of not-noping-out later in the story.

First, she goes down into the house's underground tunnel once Keith heads down there and doesn't return, where she learns that a deformed, naked woman is residing there, who promptly kills Keith.

Tess is consequently kidnapped by the woman along with the home's owner, AJ (Justin Long), though she is eventually able to escape. However, when the police don't take her claim seriously, she makes the agonising decision to return to the house to save AJ.

This leads to Tess very nearly dying when AJ eventually attempts to sacrifice her to save himself from the woman, though she just barely makes it out of the situation alive.
