10 Horror Movie Characters Who Totally NOPED OUT

4. Bret - Lights Out

Paranormal Activity
Warner Bros.

The case of Rebecca's (Teresa Palmer) boyfriend Bret (Alexander DiPersia) in Lights Out is an especially interesting one, because while he does the objectively smart thing and gets the hell out of dodge, he doesn't just stay gone.

In the third act, Bret is attacked by the malevolent spirit Diana (Alicia Vela-Bailey), who only appears in the dark, and just barely manages to escape her clutches by using his car keys to turn on his car's headlights.

Bret is then shown running to his car and driving off. Cowardly to leave Rebecca and her son to their own devices? Perhaps, but when you're dealing with an unknown supernatural entity, it's tough to blame him.

Plus, Bret doesn't just disappear out of the movie - he returns a few minutes later with the cops, who decide to go in while telling him to stay outside the house in his car. And being the smart guy he is, Bret actually complies, all while the cops are brutally slaughtered by Diana.
