10 Horror Movie Characters Who Went Through Hell (Then Died Anyway)

9. The Ruins

Drag Me To Hell
Paramount Pictures

Released in 2008, The Ruins was a late entry into the by-then dying trend of torture porn horror. It’s also one of few films in the short lived subgenre to be based on a novel. And one of very few torture porn horrors to have a botanical villain.

Yes, you read that right.

This tense and surprisingly scary gorefest mines effective survival horror from the tale of some ill-advised college kids climbing a Mayan ruin, only to end up trapped atop the building and at the mercy of some killer vines in short order.

Almost any of the character in this one could qualify for this list, as all of their fates are laughably brutal and overlong. Special mention has to go to Mathias, who has both broken legs amputated to help his chances of survival… Only to die moments later when no one notices the vines choking him. But it’s protagonist Jeff whose struggle takes the cake.

Seeing his friends slowly succumb to horrific deaths thanks to the sentient killer plants, Jeff just about survives this terrifying ordeal—then gets shot and dies instantly during an escape attempt.
