10 Horror Movie Characters Who Went Through Hell (Then Died Anyway)

Some of the victims listed here are easy to feel sorry for. After all, they’re the heroes of horror movies!

No matter how much clever thinking they do and work they put in, they’re ultimately doomed as much by the genre they’re stuck in as anything else.

But Hannibal antagonist Mason Verger is another story entirely. Sure, this guy went through all manner of gruesome hell and grotesque torture before his eventual demise. But boy, did he deserve the sick shaggy dog story he got.

Directed by Alien’s Ridley Scott, 2001’s Silence of the Lambs sequel Hannibal was a rare return to horror for the director. Played by Gary Oldman, its protagonist Mason Verger is one of cinema’s vilest creations. A twisted, incestuous child molester, Mason lost his face but survived his first encounter with Hannibal the cannibal, who lived up to his name by leaving him permanently disfigured. This set off a decades-long quest for vengeance which saw the now-paralyzed Verger breed boars to rid himself of Hannibal, bait the killer via his dear Agent Starling, and finally kidnap and attempt to kill him…

Only for Verger to end dumped in his own pit of pigs and eaten alive.

After all that!
