And finally, we have a cliffhanger ending that was memorable for all the wrong reasons. That is to say, audiences only cared about it as much as they felt that they'd been sold a movie without an ending.

The Devil Inside forgoes its expected third act by slamming to a hard stop when the film's protagonists attempt to take a possessed Isabella (Fernanda Andrade) to be exorcised, only for her to cause a car accident which seemingly kills them, all while her whereabouts are left unknown.

The movie then immediately cuts to a title card that reads, "The events of this film have never been fully explained. Visit therossifiles.com for more information on the ongoing investigation."

Evidently this absolute non-ending pissed off just about everybody who paid money to see it, and given that it grossed over $100 million on a mere $1 million budget, that's a lot of angry people.

It wasn't the case that audiences were particularly invested in the story, which was a dead-typical exorcism romp, but infuriated at the gall of a movie effectively being released unfinished in a craven attempt to make some fast money and set up a sequel.

Unsurprisingly, few had much interest in a follow-up, and over a decade later, The Devil Inside 2 still hasn't come to pass.
