10 Horror Movie Cliffhangers Nobody Cared About
2. Heather & Leather Join Forces - Texas Chainsaw 3D
Lionsgate was clearly hoping that 2013's Texas Chainsaw 3D - a direct sequel to 1974's original - would breathe fresh new life into the series by reinventing Leatherface (Dan Yeager) as something of an anti-hero.
To say that fans weren't into it just might be the understatement of the century.
The movie ends with Leatherface and protagonist Heather (Alexandra Daddario) - who are eventually revealed to be cousins - teaming up to take down the corrupt cops and vigilantes who have it out for him.
The final scene implies that Heather will live with and look after Leatherface, who will in turn protect her for the rest of his life - as confirmed by a post-credits scene where Leatherface intimidates Heather's greedy, ill-meaning foster parents.
Presumably had Texas Chainsaw been a smash hit, a sequel would've further explored the dynamic between Heather and Leather(face), yet neither the decision to transform Leatherface into a more ambiguous character nor teaming him up with a "normal" human character left many eager for more.
And so, the film under-performed at the box office, resulting in both subsequent Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies ignoring it completely, with its precise canon status currently left ambiguous.
