10 Horror Movie Cliffhangers Nobody Cared About
5. David Betrays Daniels & Tennessee - Alien: Covenant
After two hours of profoundly silly shenanigans and the cardinal sin of giving the previous film's protagonist a lousy off-screen death, Alien: Covenant wrapped up with a dour sequel tease which few could muster the energy to truly give a toss about.
In the closing scene, Covenant's remaining survivors, Daniels (Katherine Waterston) and Tennessee (Danny McBride), go back into stasis for the remainder of their journey to colony planet Origae-6.
But just as Daniels falls asleep, android "Walter" (Michael Fassbender) reveals that he's actually his malevolent "brother" David, who then regurgitates two facehugger embryos, implying that he will pose as Walter in order to continue his macabre creature experiments.
The planned sequel would've presumably seen Walter experiment upon, and likely kill, Daniels and Tennessee, and then start his own colony of horrific monsters after landing on Origae-6.
Yet coming at the end of a profoundly disappointing Alien movie, it was tough to care much at all about what it was setting up.
More to the point, after Covenant's creative direction changed significantly from its original setup as a direct sequel to Prometheus, why even expect Covenant's sequel to stay the course?
Fittingly, due to Covenant under-performing commercially, its direct sequel was indeed cancelled, with a new standalone Alien film from Fede Álvarez (Don't Breathe) instead recently wrapping shooting.
