10 Horror Movie Cliffhangers Nobody Cared About
4. Tommy Dons Jason's Mask - Friday The 13th: A New Beginning
After Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter - a misnomer if there ever was one - killed off Jason Voorhees (Ted White) "for good," the filmmakers faced a tricky predicament when they decided there was too much money in the franchise to stop there.
And so, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning ended with the revelation that its "Jason" was actually a copycat, Roy Burns (Dick Wieand), a twist that quite predictably went down like a lead balloon with fans.
But because the matter of keeping the series alive still lingered, the film hurled in a last-second cliffhanger where Tommy Jarvis (John Shepherd) - who killed Jason in the previous film - puts on Roy's hockey mask and brandishes a knife to attack Pam (Melanie Kinnaman), implying that he has been driven insane and become the new Jason.
Yet with A New Beginning grossing considerably less than The Final Chapter and being received with thunderous indifference by fans, the sixth film, Jason Lives, decided to just... ignore that sequel tease altogether, cementing how little everyone - fans and filmmakers alike - truly cared about it.
When the next movie begins, Tommy has in no way taken up Jason's mantle, but instead accidentally resurrects him for another slaughterhouse go-around.
