10 Horror Movie Creature Features That Broke All The Rules
1. Troll Hunter
Released in 2010, Troll Hunter is a superb found footage satire which turns the conventions of the monster movie genre on its head.
A flick which manages to be both a warm hearted send up of creature features and a pretty effective one in its own right, the film follows a set of film students as they accidentally uncover and endeavour to make a documentary about the titular troll hunter.
A stoic anti-hero who has spent years offing the mythological beasts of Norwegian folk lore as his day job, the eponymous character takes them on an adventure which deconstructs not only the sub genre which brought us The Blair Witch Project, but also the monster movie's reliable tropes too.
A deadpan satire of the creature feature, this flick was set after its breakout success to be remade by Home Alone director Chris Columbus's production company with The Descent director Neil Marshall at the helm.
However the project fell apart, meaning this charming and clever flick remains the definitive portrait of cinematic troll hunting, as well as a testament to the monster movie format's potential for subversive invention.
