10 Horror Movie Deaths Not Even The Actors Saw Coming

6. Josh (The Blair Witch Project)

Pretty much the entire production of The Blair Witch Project was a surprise for the actors involved, with directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez giving them very little information about what they wanted to shoot.

The filmmakers took the core trio of actors into the woods and effectively left them alone, using GPS trackers to guide them to different locations, and leaving them notes telling them how to act on each given day.

The disappearance of Josh midway through the film was constructed in a similarly secretive way. The actor who played him - also called Josh - found a note from his directors which read:

"When everybody goes to bed tonight, stay awake, and once you're sure they're asleep, leave the tent. If anybody wakes up, tell them you're going to take a piss."

In other words, Josh was told to disappear, without telling his co-stars what was going on. When they woke up, he just... wasn't there. Spooky.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
