10 Horror Movie Deaths That Came Out Of Nowhere

8. The Shining - Dick Hallorann

For a guy that has the gift of second sight, Dick Hallorann sure should've seen his own death coming. The Shining is Stanley Kubrick's riff on Stephen King's horror masterpiece, where Jack Torrence and his wife and child spend a winter in the Overlook Hotel with some pretty disastrous results. Infected by the evil that lives in the place, Jack loses his nut and goes on an iconic murder spree, sending his telepathic son Danny into emergency mode to shoot off a signal to Dick Hallorann.

The Head Chef gleans something is wrong and heads to the hotel to check it out - only to get a fire axe right between his ribs for the effort. Jee, thanks Jack.

Not only does this come as a complete shock narrative wise, since again, Dick should have known, but it was also a deviation from the source material that sees Dick help Danny and Wendy escape rather than just lie down and bleed to death. I mean, fair enough, he was hit with an axe and all, but still - it was quite the unexpected swerve.
