10 Horror Movie Directors That Quit The Genre
3. Christophe Gans (Silent Hill)
Now, as is the case with all the directors listed here, only time will tell whether Brotherhood of the Wolf creator Christophe Gans does opt to stay away from the horror genre in the future. After all, the mercurial French helmer has claimed he would love to return to the Silent Hill series at some point in the future.
But the first film came out over a decade and a half ago, Gans didn't return for the sequel, and critical responses don't leave much hope for a follow up any time soon.
It's a shame, as Gans' 2006 adaptation of the beloved horror video game series of the same name Silent Hill is an underrated gem, a genuinely creepy and evocatively realized tale of loss which uses a mother's attempts to escape the eponymous town to externalise all sort of tragic trauma.
It's a movie more impressive in its production design and hypnotic direction than the thin character or plot. This's a recurring theme for Gans, whose most recent film, 2014's Beauty and the Beast, is a beautiful and vivid fairy tale well worth watching for its visual feast alone.
