This one is a bit of heartbreaker, as this helmer's affinity for the horror genre seems to have cost him the career opportunity of a lifetime thanks to the rigid adherence to formula expected by the MCU's stakeholders.

Then again this man is responsible for 2008's The Day the Earth Stood Still remake, so don't get too misty eyed.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson won mainstream acclaim for 2012's creepy haunted snuff movie horror Sinister, a brutally effective Ethan Hawke vehicle which combined dark family drama with unsettling supernatural shenanigans to great effect.

2014's Deliver Us From Evil was a far messier affair, plagued by the same problems as the earlier Exorcism, but Sinister does guarantee the director has at least one great horror in his back catalogue.

However, 2016 saw Derrickson direct the critically well-liked Dr Strange, one of countless more minor, quirky MCU entries which went under the radar of some fans but is actually a pretty solid piece of superhero filmmaking. But the director's claims that the film's sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, would be the MCU's "first horror film", turned to ashes when the studio balked and replaced him with Sam Raimi.

The Evil Dead creator, famous for his family friendly appeal.
