10 Horror Movie Douchebags We Love To Hate

3. George Lutz - The Amityville Horror (1979/2005)

Although 1979's The Amityville Horror and its 2005 remake don't have much in common besides the title, they do both manage an incredibly unflattering portrayal of protagonist George Lutz.

Jay Anson's novel paints George as quite the amiable guy, someone that soldiers on and attempts to keep his family from fracturing.

However the 1979 adaption chose to veto this and from the very outset, James Brolin's Lutz is rude, irritable and intimidating. As the film proceeds, Brolin becomes more and more irritable and eventually becomes indifferent to his children, beats his wife and seemingly only cares about his own needs.

Similarly, the 2005 remake paints George Lutz as someone rather unconcerned for the welfare of his family. Unlike Brolin's portrayal, Ryan Reynolds' Lutz has a surprising amount of sadism and cruelty on display, opting to openly resent his step-children and subject them to cruel punishments (all while showing off his abs, of course).

Both character turns make it very hard for the audience to feel sympathy for Lutz or will him to escape the paranormal nightmare he and his family are trapped in.
