10 Horror Movie Flops That NOBODY Saw Coming
3. The Invasion
The Invasion is the fourth film adaptation of Jack Finney's novel, The Body Snatchers, which revolves around aliens called Pod People who replace the locals of a small town.
Although the earlier movies were analogies for McCarthyism and post-Watergate distrust, it still resonates with modern audiences, due to how effectively it explores conformity and consumerism. Considering The Invasion was released in a post 9/11 world, its themes of paranoia and turning against one another never felt more relevant.
The Invasion had a terrific cast, including Jeffrey Wright, Nicole Kidman, and Daniel Craig, (who had just become an A-lister after his towering performance in Casino Royale the previous year). The previous adaptations may have set the bar high, but there was no reason The Invasion couldn't match them.
Sadly, it's hard to find a redeeming feature in this dreck. The Invasion is so predictable, underdeveloped, and convoluted, it was like the filmmakers weren't even trying. Most annoying of all, this adaption barely explores its terrifying premise in a creative way.
With that said, the reviews weren't as bad as the box-office. Although it would be difficult for a horror feature with an $80 million dollar to make a reasonable profit, The Invasion didn't come close, earning $40 million.
