10 Horror Movie Heroes That Should Have Been Villains

9. Ray Bronson - I Know What You Did Last Summer

The Conjuring Ed Lorraine Warren
Columbia Pictures

Based on Lois Duncan's novel of the same name, this teen slasher opens with Ray (Freddie Prince Jr.) and his three friends crashing into a pedestrian. Believing they will be arrested for manslaughter, the group reluctantly agree to dump the body.

Of course, on the anniversary of this incident, the four receive letters reading, "I know what you did last summer", as they are targeted by a mysterious fisherman who will stop at nothing until they're dead.

Final Girl Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) does some digging and believes the man they crashed into was a local, David Egan. After further investigation, she learns someone called Billy Blue has a connection with David. So, when Julie realises Ray's boat is named Billy Blue, all signs point to him being the killer.

However, this turns out to be a red herring as, in reality, the killer is the believed-to-be-dead pedestrian, Ben Willis, who was run over shortly after murdering David.

This reveal is a letdown since the pedestrian was the most obvious suspect and had the most obvious motive. Even though Ray was a red herring, him being the culprit would've worked better as, considering he was the one driving the car that night, his guilt could've driven him to murder to keep his dark secret buried.
