10 Horror Movie Jump Scares That You NEVER Forget

8. Paranormal Activity - Footprints

Dawn Of The Dead Opening
Paramount Pictures

It's easy to forget how terrifying the first Paranormal Activity was upon its release in 2007 before its mythology became far too convoluted and a deluge of sequels and imitators weakened its initial appeal.

A found footage film at heart, Paranormal Activity follows the haunting of Katie and Micah, a couple that is being accosted by seemingly otherworldly forces. Katie's backstory demonstrates her willingness to believe that something evil is in the house, while Micah sets up the cameras in a skeptical fashion in order to prove that there is nothing to worry about.

As unexplainable events keep happening and the tension mounts, the couple comes up with an idea to get conclusive proof. They place flour at the doorway, reasoning anyone entering will leave traces for them to find in the morning.

To their horror, they are proven right. Among the many jump scares in the film, it is this one that inspires outright dread. The sound of thundering steps approach the sleeping couple, and then, footprints appear. The prints are distinctly inhuman, misshapen if not outright cloven or hooved.

In a single moment, it confirms to the audience that their worst fears are true, and standing, invisible and malevolent, over the hapless couple.
