10 Horror Movie Jump Scares That You NEVER Forget
7. House On Haunted Hill - The Witch
William Castle was a part-film director, part-carnival barker. The blueprint of a style-over-substance filmmaker, Castle was determined to find a way to pack audiences into horror films, which had experienced somewhat of a recession as the novelty of the classic Universal monsters had been overexposed.
Among the gimmicks castled employed included buzzers attached to seats in order to accompany the supposed breakout of the titular monster in The Tingler, while 13 Ghosts provided special cellophane glasses that could enable a viewer to see the otherwise-invisible phantoms that haunted the film.
House on Haunted Hill was no different, as Castle employed a skeleton to float over the audience during a similar scene on screen. However, the film itself had a moment far scarier than any cheap Halloween prop.
In the film, Vincent Price's Frederick invites five individuals $10,000 each to spend the evening in a spooky house with him and his wife, Annabelle. Strange things begin happening almost immediately, terrifying poor Nora. Together, she accompanies Lance to try and determine the source of the spooky occurrences.
When Lance believes he may have found a hidden door, he goes into another room to knock on a wall, with Nora reciprocating on the other side to find a hollow point. Going lower, Nora knocks at the base, only to raise and be confronted by a horrific hag right behind her. Recoiling and screeching in horror, the inhuman way the crone glides out of the room has stuck with moviegoers for decades.
