10 Horror Movie Jump Scares That You NEVER Forget

6. Audition - Body Bag

Dawn Of The Dead Opening
Film Face

Audition does what horror is supposed to do: it makes viewers uncomfortable. Provocative, eerie, and dripping in atmosphere, this Japanese film starts off relatively tame, only to reach an absolutely pulse-pounding and brutally prolonged climax. Indeed, some might even be surprised that it is a horror film, until it's far too late to turn back.

Widower Aoyama is urged to get back into the dating scene by his son, but is unsure of how to proceed in doing so. In order to accomplish this, he enlists the assistance of movie producer friend Yoshikawa. Together, they pretend to be making a movie, looking for an ingenue to play Aoyama's wife through a series of titular auditions.

The two seemingly find the woman they've been looking for in Asami. Polite, timid, but seemingly hiding some vast emotional depth, Aoyama is completely smitten with her. Yoshikawa is dubious, considering he could not validate any of the references Asami provided him. Aoyama persists in a move that would be his undoing.

Calling Asami, the audience is taken to her residence, a sparse place where they've only seen her waiting patiently by a nearby black rotary phone, a sack behind her. As the phone rings, Asami gives a wry smile, moving to the receiver when the bag....moves. Something groans. Something alive.

Using minimalist verbal imagery, Audition provides its viewers with a terrifying realization: Aoyama is in big trouble. And all they can do is wait and watch.
