10 Horror Movie Mistakes Left In To Troll You

6. The Imaginary Front Door - The Birds

Alfred Hitchcock remains one of the most precise and exacting filmmakers of all time, and generally if something appears in one of his movies, it was on purpose. Even some of the "mistakes," apparently.

His superb thriller The Birds concludes with the survivors making their solemn exit from the house and driving away from Bodega Bay.

As they leave the house, Mitch (Rod Taylor) is seen to open the door, except...he actually doesn't (0:27 in the below clip).

Yes, we see a ray of light splash across the survivors, but anyone paying close attention will realise that Mitch never actually physically opens the door, because the door was already open in order for the camera to pass through the doorway interrupted.

This was obviously a feat of technical problem-solving by Hitchcock, deciding to simply flash some light across the actors to give the implication of a door opening.

Though it's distracting once you know it's there, it's also a glorious testament to Hitch's ahead-of-his-time creativity. After all, how many of us have ever actually noticed that Rod Taylor wasn't really opening that door?
