10 Horror Movie “Mistakes” That Were Totally Intentional
8. Carrie's Mother's Implausible Crucifiction - Carrie
Carrie climaxes with the titular character (Sissy Spacek) murdering her cruel, abusive mother Margaret (Piper Laurie), by using her telekinetic abilities to stab her numerous times and even pin her to the sides of the wall with a pair of knives.
It's a fun sequence, but if you consider the physics of Margaret's death it makes no damn sense at all.
There's simply no way that Margaret's corpse could remain upright while pinned like that - her body would sag and eventually collapse, because it's impossible for two knives to hold up that much body weight.
And even if you consider that Carrie's supernatural powers allowed her to manipulate the properties of the knives and their holding power somehow, Brian De Palma confirmed on the DVD's special features that there was a more overt, symbolic reason for it.
The manner in which Margaret is posed is supposed to imitate Carrie's statue of St. Sebastian - similarly pierced and stood in the exact same position. Sometimes it's worth deliberately betraying the laws of physics for a cool visual allegory.
