10 Horror Movie Musicals You Simply Have To See

8. The Lure

This is The Little Mermaid if Ariel hung out with the Fitzgerald sisters from Ginger Snaps and then went to Tanz Dance Akademie from Suspiria. This Polish horror musical from 2015 is as creative as it is dark, taking the well-known mermaid mythology and does something completely different with it.

Following two mermaid sisters, Golden and Silver, who become quite taken with a metal band they come across playing on a beach, the two must navigate the sex, drugs and rock n’ roll that follows. Incorporating elements of the classic oceanic legend and then making them sing rock music should not work, but it somehow comes together brilliantly.

Like a classic rock opera, the tragedy and drama are amplified by fantastic music that hops from genre to genre (the synthy You Were the Beat of my Heart is a BANGER by the way). Plus, the horror pulls no punches, with gore and fantastic practical effects galore. If you ever wanted to see a dark, 80s-era retelling of a classic fairy tale, The Lure is absolutely perfect.
