5. Where Did The It Come From? - It Follows
It Follows centres around young woman Jay as she finds herself being pursued by a supernatural being called The It. This foreboding figure can take any form and appear any time, leaving Jay permanently on edge. Worse still, The It has no discernible weakness. Realising the curse is passed on through sex, Jay must find someone to sleep with to avoid meeting a terrible fate.
Conceptually, The It is genuinely chilling. But what makes the entity more frightening is the fact nothing is disclosed about it. Unlike other curse films like The Ring or Smile, there's no big reveal scene where our protagonist learns the origins of her pursuer. It's never explained what The It wants, or how the curse came to be. It's not specified if this malevolent force is living thing, a ghost, or a demon.
Because little is given away, The It could've come across as a dull and non-compelling antagonist. And yet, The It is considered one of the most memorable and terrifying horror monsters of the last decade, even though nothing is known about the paranormal creature.
