Similarly to Cube, it's the idea that fate is out of your hands that's really scary about the opening to Saw. Well, that and the prospect of having to hack through your own leg.

The one that started it all in 2004 begins in a big way. Adam Stanheight (Leigh Whannell) wakes up underwater in a darkened room, having been taken there against his will.

He rises from the water to find himself in a bathtub. The lights come on and he sees that's he's trapped in a disused bathroom with two other men - one alive, one dead.

The dead man has apparently killed himself, as his head is bloodied and he's holding a revolver. The living man is chained to a pipe via his ankle, the same predicament that faces Adam.

You could watch Saw's opening over and over again and find new things to be scared about. The idea of being kidnapped, the dirtiness of the room, the prospect of never being found, the dead guy.

It's all terrifying, and that's before the tape recorder in the guy's other hand is even played.
