10 Horror Movie Openings That Pissed Everyone Off
8. Where's Jeff!? - Saw IV
Saw III ended with a brutal gut-punch of a cliffhanger ending by revealing to survivor Jeff (Angus Macfadyen) that his young daughter Corbett has been kidnapped and locked away, and that he'll need to play another game if he wants to get her back.
As compelling a hook as this provided for Saw IV, the sequel basically decided to forget about it almost entirely.
The fourth film opens instead with Jigsaw's (Tobin Bell) autopsy, which kickstarts another series of games in which Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is tested - though as we later discover, he turns out to be the new Jigsaw.
Fans were left agonising about Jeff's fate until the final few minutes of the film, when he's summarily killed off by Agent Strahm (Scott Patterson), who shoots Jeff in self-defense while he angrily waves a gun around.
As for Corbett? We have to wait until Saw V to see her safely retrieved from her imprisonment by Hoffman, still acting under the guise of a hero.
Curiously the original script for Saw IV actually opened with Jeff being killed in a blender-type trap, but for reasons unknown this was scrapped and he was instead killed off with a mere 10 seconds of screen time tacked onto the end of the movie.
The Jigsaw autopsy was cool and all, but leaving people hanging about Jeff's fate only to deliver such an unsatisfactory outcome 90 minutes later was absolutely infuriating.
