10 Horror Movie Reboots (And Scoring How Successful They Were)
7. The Amityville Horror (2005)
The Amityville Horror was a Jay Anson-penned 1977 novel based on the Lutz family’s experience when they lived in 112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville. The family moved out after just 28 days, complaining of paranormal activity. The validity of the Lutz’s account of events has been called into question, and has been the source of several high-profile lawsuits.
This controversy has doubtlessly fuelled interest in The Amityville Horror and made it one of America’s most popular and enduring haunted house stories, resulting in no less than 16 (and counting!) film adaptations.
The Amityville Horror (2005) was a remake of the 1979 movie, starring Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George. Whereas the original movie was wildly successful, the '05 do-over failed to kindle the same interest and was criticised for being derivative and failing to add anything new to the established Amityville canon.
Despite this film’s relative failure, it’s difficult to imagine another remake not cropping up again at some point in the future.
