10 Horror Movie Reboots (And Scoring How Successful They Were)
6. Evil Dead (2013)
This is a decidedly different film to the madcap bloodbath that was Sam Raimi’s original Evil Dead trilogy, and Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead reboot misses Bruce Campbell’s boundless charisma as the series’ hero, Ash Williams.
Of course, Ash does make an appearance here, but it's perhaps the most underwhelming post-credits cameo until Bucky Barnes turned up at the end of Black Panther.
This film was intended as an alternative sequel to The Evil Dead (1981), but it lacks the trademark weirdness and tongue-in-cheek glee of those other movies; this is a far more conventional horror film, with a group of friends heading to a creepy cabin in the woods to help their friend kick a drug habit. There, they discover a basement filled with occult relics, including the fabled Necronomicon.
Something 2013's Evil Dead retains is the visceral grossness of the franchise, as people are mutilated throughout the film in truly stomach-churning ways.
There’s little to recommend this over the original trilogy, which is both more entertaining and unique - and scarier! The Ash vs Evil Dead TV series was a far better follow-up than the Evil Dead reboot, retaining more of that signature tone.
