10 Horror Movie Romances That Make Love Terrifying

8. Cat People (1942)

The Fly
RKO

In Cat People, a man and a woman meet, go on several dates, fall in love, and even get married despite never having kissed. This is because the lady in question, Irena (Simone Simon), believes she is descended from the cat people of a medieval Serbian village, and that she will turn into a violent panther if aroused.

Since kissing his wife is out of the question, husband Oliver (Kent Smith) begins spending more and more time with his female friend Alice (Jane Randolph). But wait, another trigger for feline transformation is - jealousy!

It’s a fairly doomed marriage truth be told. And the only person who believes Irena is her rival in love, Alice, after she is stalked by an unseen wildcat in two wonderfully tense sequences.

Then there’s the sleazy psychiatrist who, after planting a kiss on Irena, gets mauled to bits.

It may not be as horrifying as other entries on this list, but Cat People plays on male attitudes towards female sexuality: it is as desirable as it is threatening.
