Vampire stories are always steeped in romance. Vampires are sexy because they tempt us with immortality in exchange for our lives. They are powerful, predatory creatures that reject God and revel in blood, sex, and death. They’re also inherently tragic because as much as we want to be dead like them, we wish to humanise them too.

This combination makes them the perfect figures for a taboo romance.

Speaking of taboo, let’s look at the story of a female, chador-wearing vampire (Sheila Vand) who preys on men, set in Iran.

One night our vampire - The Girl - bumps into Arash (Arash Marandi), a young chap returning home from a Halloween party dressed as Dracula. They end up going back to her place where they listen to dream-pop in what must be the coolest scene in any vampire film.

What makes this romance frightening is that we know that The Girl has killed and will kill again, despite resisting the urge to bite Arash. At the end of the film as the two run away together, Arash realises that The Girl has killed his own father. Yet, after a brief moment of turmoil, he still decides to go away with her.

Arash fulfils the fantasy of many by eloping with a murderous vampire. The danger is all part of the thrill.
