10 Horror Movie Romances That Make Love Terrifying
5. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
The final vampire film on this list, and by far the soppiest one, Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Dracula is an overblown romance tale that spans hundreds of years.
In the year 1462 Dracula’s (Gary Oldman) beloved Elisbatha (Winona Ryder) commits suicide, sending him into a heartbroken fury. He promises to avenge Elisbatha and stabs a big stone cross, drinking the blood that spurts forth from it, becoming a vampire!
We all know the story here - after centuries of pining and harem-building, it is 1897 and Dracula discovers that Elisabetha is reincarnated as Mina and now lives in London. Thus begins Dracula’s journey across land and sea to be reunited with her, leaving plenty of exsanguinated corpses in his lovelorn wake.
It may half-pretend to be a horror film, but Bram Stoker’s Dracula is ultimately the grandaddy of gothic erotica.
Most of the film is lit like a brothel, bathed in red (the colour of love and blood!), and it doesn’t skimp on either the sex or the gore, with raunchy scenes involving vampire brides and a big hairy wolf-monster clear standouts.
There’s a reason this film is such an enduring guilty pleasure.
