Speaking of eloping with murderous vampires, Let the Right One In is the coming-of-story where young Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant) meets young-looking but ageless vampire Eli (Lina Leandersson).

Tomas Alfredson’s film deals with two male relationships formed with a vampire. At the start of the film Eli’s blood supply is taken care of by Håkan (Per Ragnar), a middle aged man who kills innocent locals and collects their blood for Eli to consume. When caught in the act by police he attempts suicide to protect Eli. For his efforts, Eli kills Håkan in hospital and feeds on him.

The lengths Håkan goes to for Eli are terrifying, killing others and ultimately sacrificing himself for her.

Eli goes to similarly terrifying lengths to protect Oskar. In the film’s grand finale sequence she dismembers Oskar’s school bullies at the swimming pool. The perks of dating a vampire.

The film ends with a young Oskar boarding a train out of town with Eli hidden in a trunk. Just like at the end of A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, the assumption is that they will escape their grim pasts for a blissful future.

Or is Oskar simply Eli’s next Håkan?
