10 Horror Movie Scenes Worse Than Death

6. Noah's Death - The Ring (2002)

Veronica Movie
DreamWorks Pictures

Much like Hideo Nakata’s Japanese original, Gore Verbinski’s version of The Ring is steeped in an oppressively bleak atmosphere as investigative journalist Rachel (Naomi Watts) races against time to save the lives of herself and her young son after stumbling upon a cursed video tape. The result is a deeply chilling ghost story that's also one of the best horror remakes ever made.

Containing some truly frightening sequences from the original alongside some of its own macabre additions, there’s plenty of nightmarish moments to be found here. However, the most dread-inducing sequence arrives towards the end, after Rachel and her ex-husband Noah (Martin Henderson) believe they’ve broken the tape’s curse.

In what’s become one of the most iconic scenes in horror cinema, Noah’s TV switches on to reveal the vengeful ghost girl emerge from a well and slowly walk towards the screen before crawling out of the television. Noah and viewers watch on helplessly as the dead girl makes their way towards him, with a jump cut to her eye sealing his fate.

With her TV static appearance and an eerie electronic score adding to the terror, this scene is equally terrifying in both the Japanese and American versions.
