10 Horror Movie Scenes You Remember Totally Wrong

1. The Monster Doesn't Walk With Outstretched Hands - Frankenstein

Hannibal Lecter
Universal Pictures

Ask anyone to do an impression of Frankenstein's Monster, and there's a good chance they'll perform a shambolic walk, with their hands outstretched.

Weirdly, Boris Karloff's iconic creature never moves like this when he played the character in Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, or Son of Frankenstein.

Which begs the question, where did this trope come from? The answer is surprising complicated. The fourth entry, Ghost of Frankenstein, concludes with deranged shepherd Ygor (Bela Lugosi) transplanting his mind into the Monster, hoping to use his mighty power to rule the world. To his horror, Ygor discovers the operation has turned him blind, before the movie comes to an abrupt end.

Now, this is where things get messy. In the follow-up, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, Bela Lugosi (who plays the Monster this time) holds his hands out to feel his way around the room, to convey he can't see.

But during post-production, the director cut major story components, including the blind Monster subplot. Because all the sightless Monster scenes were kept in, his lumbering movements have been associated with the character ever since.
