10 Horror Movie Sequels That Are Just As Good As The Original
1. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
There is little doubt that George A. Romero revolutionized the zombie genre, first with the cult classic Night of the Living Dead (1968), and later with its surprisingly superb sequel Dawn of the Dead.
Each film offers a refreshingly innovative take on the zombie genre, providing subtle commentary on a range of contemporary political issues such as the Vietnam War and the ills of capitalism.
While Dawn of the Dead is not an explicit continuation of the preceding Night of the Living Dead, the sequel examines other facets of a hypothetical zombie invasion. Set in a sleepy suburban shopping mall, the sequel is understood by critics and fans alike as a critique of mindless consumerism, represented by the zombies who find themselves instinctively flocking to the mall.
Generally considered one of the best zombie films ever, the sequel makes good use of its bigger budget, utilising a wide array of special effects which hold up to this day.
While its predecessor was filmed in chilling black-and-white, the sickeningly lurid color palette of Dawn of the Dead (bright red blood drips from the mouths of unpalatably green zombies) renders this sequel a truly terrifying visual fright-fest.
