While Scream (1996) reinvigorated the slasher genre, offering fans a meta take on an otherwise flagging genre, its sequel upped the stakes, deftly satirizing horrors sequels and franchises.

Due to the rampant commercial and critical success of Scream, production for the sequel began while its predecessor was still showing in cinemas. However, the end result feels anything but rushed, with creative new kills, witty dialogue, and an intriguing twist.

The film follows the survivors of the original Woodsboro slayings as they set off to college. Neve Campbell returns as Sidney Prescott, who hopes to live a normal life, until she and her friends quickly learn that the universe has other plans. Stalked once more by a masked killer, the gang are picked off one-by-one in a series of gory stabbings.

This sequel not only manages to maintain the satirical pulse of the first film, but also doubles down on the self-referential comedy which made the original Scream so undeniably iconic.

Most famously, the ill-fated Randy (Jamie Kennedy) lists a series of ‘ horror sequel rules’ to the dim-witted Officer Dewey (David Arquette), including ‘the body count is always bigger’ and ‘the death scenes are always much more elaborate’, two ‘rules’ which this gruesome sequel most certainly adheres to.
