10 Horror Movie Sequels That Pissed Everyone Off

5. Spiral

The Descent Part 2
Lionsgate

Despite the fact Saw: The Final Chapter was meant to be, y'know, the final chapter, the studio attempted to revitalise the franchise with another entry called Jigsaw. But with nothing new to offer, this sequel was seen as a cynical cash-grab. Once again, it looked like the Saw series was dead.

But when another follow-up was announced, fans were optimistic. This entry, Spiral, had Chris Rock serving as the co-writer, executive producer, and lead actor. Based on the teaser, it looked like the series was going into a different direction, rather than relying on the tired formula of its predecessors. And if that didn't have fans sold, it also starred Samuel L. Jackson.

But due to its rote plot, trite characters, uneven pace, and a predictable twist, Spiral was the weakest entry yet. The traps, which have served as the series' selling point, were so uncreative, they left no impact on viewers whatsoever.

Even though Chris Rock is a marvellous comedian, he's completely miscast here. No matter how hard he tries to come across as a no-nonsense grizzled cop, you don't buy it for a second. His performance is hampered further since he keeps throwing in jokes, which jars with the film's otherwise serious tone.
