10 Horror Movie Sequels That Totally Insulted Great Characters
8. Newt - Alien 3
This may be one of the most infamous cases of a sequel
completely ignoring the preceding films in the franchise and losing a brilliant
character in the process, but poor Newt deserves a moment in the spotlight for
how poorly David Fincher’s bleak, boring Alien 3 treats her in the wake of its
action-packed James Cameron-helmed predecessor.
In the intense, propulsive Aliens, Newt acts as something of a surrogate daughter for our heroine Ripley, with the adorable sprog giving Sigourney Weaver’s hard-ass protagonist an outlet for her more vulnerable side. This is made even more pointed in the original director’s cut which reveals that Ripley’s real daughter died of old age during Ripley’s tenure in hypersleep, a detail which further underlines the maternal connection implicit in the iconic line “get away from her, you bitch!”
Of course, canonically all of this is rendered pointless by Alien 3, wherein Ripley’s ship crashing kills Newt offscreen, with a brief shot of her shattered pod being the only appearance afforded to her by the troubled third instalment.
The flick famously went through countless revisions before being released and Fincher himself went on to disown it, but it unfortunately it was too late for our dear late Newt.
