10 Horror Movie Sequels That Totally Insulted Great Characters
7. Paxton - Hostel II
As Hostel reached the end of its first hour, viewers
could be forgiven for wondering just what all the fuss was about. Eli Roth’s mega-controversial
torture porn horror was one of a few hits, alongside Neil Marshall’s The Descent,
Dave Payne’s Reeker, and Alexandre Aja’s brutal remake of Wes Craven’s The Hill
Have Eyes, which were slated to usher in an age of unseen extremity in horror,
combining the intense gore of the eighties with the bleak cynicism of the
seventies.
And yet an hour into the film, no one among the central cast was dead! Then the spate of torture starts, and the ordeal doesn’t let up until the film’s closing moments as sole survivor Paxton avenges the horrific deaths of his mates. It takes a pretty badass character to not only survive an encounter with the monstrous Elite Hunting, but to escape and also off a few of their personnel and customers? Pretty impressive. Leaves the audience excited to see what Paxton, hell bent on revenge, will do next—
Which, as it turns out, is “die a few seconds into the sequel”, reduced to an opening scene kill after his brave and cunning display at the close of the first film.
