10 Horror Movie Sequels That Were Just Too Cruel

7. Alien 3

The Descent Part 2
20th Century Fox

Alien 3 is, in many respects, the textbook example of a sequel which seemed determined to callously thumb its nose at as many fans as humanly possible.

The film of course kicks off with Aliens fan favourites Newt (Carrie Henn) and Hicks (Michael Biehn) being killed off-screen, which didn't exactly set things off on an amiable foot with most fans.

Though there's actually a rock solid movie within the core of Alien 3, it's capped off with an ending which remains similarly polarising. Those final moments see heroine Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) plunge herself into a furnace to prevent Weyland-Yutani from acquiring the Alien Queen that bursts out of her.

On one hand, Alien 3 feels like a pretty concrete ending to the whole Alien franchise, but on the other it's a film that holds a shockingly flippant regard for its most beloved characters.

Ripley dying is certainly the lesser of the three evils, though, with Newt's shock demise coming off as especially cruel - enough that some fans just straight-up don't consider it canon.
