10 Horror Movie Soundtracks You Need To Listen To
3. It Follows
The breakthrough film from David Robert Mitchell, It Follows is a revitalising, dreamlike take on the slasher genre as we see Jay (Maika Monroe) being pursued by a shape-shifting supernatural entity. Unlike other movie monsters, this nameless creature is always slowly walking towards its target. The only way to avoid it is to have sex with someone so they'll become the new target.
Critically acclaimed for its creepy atmosphere and haunting visuals, a large part of the film's tone can be attributed to composer Richard Veerland, who's better known by the name Disasterpeace. Previously providing the music for video game FEZ, It Follows was his first feature film project.
Existing somewhere between the realms of John Carpenter and Angelo Badalamenti, Disasterpeace's haunting synth score effortlessly shifts between the serene and the disturbing. Using menacing drones and a dissonant melodies, track Title embodies everything that makes this score musically unique. Contrast it with the melancholic and sombre soundscape of Jay and the ear-piercing intensity of Doppel and it becomes clear just how musically varied this soundtrack is.
Working closely with Robert Mitchell, the score was only completed three weeks before the film was set to premiere at Cannes.
