10 Horror Movie Soundtracks You Need To Listen To
4. Beyond The Black Rainbow
The debut film by writer-director Panos Cosmatos (who also directed 2018's Mandy, which has a phenomenal soundtrack), Beyond The Black Rainbow is a seriously weird, experimental, low budget sci-fi horror. Set in an underground facility in which psychologist Barry Nyle (Michael J Rodgers) keeps a woman (Eva Bourne) as a prisoner, this polarising film's unconventional presentation has seen it become the subject of plenty of online discussion about what this film could mean.
A wholly surreal viewing experience, things only become increasingly more abstract as the film progresses. Psychadelic hullicination sequences, hyper-stylised editing, and gore are all woven together to create an unavoidable sense of uneasiness; but none of these would be anywhere as effective without its soundtrack.
A love letter and homage to the trippy synth sounds of 80s horrors like The Keep, the minimalist score penned by musician Jeremy Schmidt (aka Sinoia Caves). Balancing that fine line between sounding like it came from the 80s (when the film is set) and futuristic, the film's sense of time and place is further warped, elevating its visuals to a whole other level of strange.
With sparse dialogue in the film, most of the emotional beats are carried by this excellent score.
