10 Horror Movie Trailers That Lied to Everybody

9. The Monkey

In The Monkey, two brothers find their lives changed forever after they discover a drum-playing monkey toy. Every time the windup trinket completes a drum solo, somebody suffers a grisly death.

Even though Osgood Perkins' OTT horror sounds silly, the trailer gives off a very sinister vibe. As hard as it is to believe, the titular fiend is more terrifying than the monkey from Toy Story 3.

Considering it's directed by the man behind Longlegs, produced by James Wan, and adapted from Stephen King's short story, The Monkey has all the signs of a full-blown horror.

However, it's made clear during the film's prologue that The Monkey is a horror-comedy. Though the deaths are brutal, it's obvious they're played for laughs.

The Monkey looks like it's going to be similar to Wan's other work, like Saw or Malignant, but it's closer in tone with campy slashers like Happy Death Day or The Babysitter. The end result is thoroughly enjoyable, but the goofy tone may throw some people off purely because they weren't ready for it.
