10 Horror Movie Victims Who Were Actually The Villain
7. Carrie White - Carrie (1976)
Viewers going in blind to this Stephen King adaption would've had quite the surprise.
For those unfamiliar with the property, Carrie is a high school misfit. She is mercilessly picked on by her peers purely for the fact her mother is particularly religious.
You'd be forgiven for thinking this premise doesn't sound like a very horrifying story. For most of the runtime, Carrie plays like a coming-of-age drama. Yes, there are some supernatural elements with the teen finding she has the ability to move objects with her mind, but for the most part, this is pushed to the back burner.
Brian DePalma instead chooses to study the characters and by the time Carrie makes it to her high school prom, we've all but forgotten her supernatural plight. Endearing and strong performances by Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie and Betty Buckley leave us invested in these characters and we root for Carrie as her dreams of high school popularity come true.
But with the fall of a bucket DePalma pulls the rug right out from under us. As Carrie is cruelly drenched in pig's blood, incredible sound design and editing display the moment her fantasy becomes a nightmare.
For these final 20 minutes, Spacek's sweet, shy Carrie becomes an unstoppable force of rage, mercilessly killing anyone she sets her eyes on. Embracing her psychic powers she becomes a girl on a villainous, but understandable rampage.
