10 Horror Movie Victims Who Were Actually The Villain
3. Grace Stewart - The Others (2001)
2001's The Others is a sorely underrated film for a number of reasons. Although it made a tidy profit, it seemed to come and go with little fanfare. This is such a shame in hindsight.
For a start the film is wonderfully atmospheric, the fog-shrouded manor house perfectly captures the Gothic dank associated with the English countryside. The Others is also genuinely scary, relying on more subtle scares to assert a ghostly presence. In light of today's "jump-scare" culture, this is a refreshing change.
So much can be said about the suburb performances, it is safe to say Nicole Kidman is at her best here. Her portrayal of a frayed single-mother coping during the war is among her finest work. We always sense a certain darkness to her that seems to hover right beneath the surface.
The sad truth is, Kidman's Grace isn't just frayed... she hasn't coped with her circumstances. In a truly stunning and tragic reveal we learn that she and her children have been dead all along. They are the "others" and have been unknowingly tormenting their home's new owners.
This brilliant reveal also discloses that Grace's lingering contempt for her disabled children boiled over and she killed them both before committing suicide. Watching Kidman crumble as she accepts this is heartbreaking, making it difficult to dislike her for being revealed as the villain of the piece.
