We can all blame Rian Johnson for bringing this product placement quirk to the attention of mainstream audiences, and in turn spoiling murder-mystery/slasher movies forever more.

Basically, Apple is extremely protective of their image and as such won't allow villains to use iPhones in movies, ensuring that anyone who pointedly doesn't use an iPhone should be considered immediately sus.

And this in turn made recent cult horror film The Blackening incredibly predictable, when during his introductory scene at the start of the movie, Clifton (Jermaine Fowler) mentions that he owns an Android phone, much to his friend's disgust.

At first glance this might simply seem like a fleeting joke about the rivalry between iPhone and Android phones, but it's actually blatantly telling you that Clifton is the one to watch.

And while this could've been a clever misdirect to throw viewers off, it isn't at all - in the third act, we learn that Clifton orchestrated the night of slaughter against his "friends" as revenge for them constantly doubting his level of "Blackness" in college.
