10 Horror Movies Even More Disturbing Than You Thought
1. The Tree Has A Taste For Flesh - Poltergeist
Poltergeist revolves around a family whose home is invaded by malevolent ghosts, as is eventually revealed to be a result of the suburban development being built on top of a cemetery.
Though the gravestones were moved to another location, the bodies weren't, leaving some very, very pissed off ghosts behind.
As such, the ghosts' sphere of influence extends beyond the confines of the house itself to the tree situated outside it, and while on an initial viewing it's reasonable to accept this as mere spooky horror movie shenanigans, it's actually a little creepier when you really think about it.
After all, the tree is large enough to suggest that it was planted a long time ago - it clearly wasn't placed in the backyard when the Freeling family's home was being built.
And so, the tree was almost certainly there when the cemetery was open, and as such its roots have effectively been feeding on the corpses of those buried in the cemetery ever since.
With that in mind, the tree subsequently attempting to devour the Freelings' young son Robbie (Oliver Robins) by dragging him out of his bedroom hits a little differently.
After potentially centuries of absorbing nutrients from the dead, the ghosts almost gave the tree the opportunity to snack on a decidedly fresher meal. Ewww.
